Microsoft will roll out its latest update to the Windows 10 operating system in May. Originally code named “I9H1” and slated to land in April, the release was pushed back a month and renamed “May 2019 Update.” Windows Insider users can begin downloading the update as early as next week.

While the new update promises several small tweaks to freshen the look and feel of the operating system, users should not expect a massive overhaul. Added features include a new start menu and light theme, upgrades to the search tool and Cortana, and the addition of an emoji chooser called “Kaomoji.”

Microsoft also announced planned changes to its distribution rollout process for this and future updates, allowing customers to decide whether they wish to install updates to their devices as soon as they become available. Microsoft said these changes resulted from customer feedback, including complaints that previous Windows updates were “disruptive.”

“We will begin broader availability in late May for commercial customers, users who choose the new May 2019 Update for their Windows 10 PC via “check for updates,” and customers whose devices are nearing the end of support on a given release,” wrote Microsoft Windows CVP Mike Fortin.

Several issues plagued last year’s “April 2018” Windows update, such as introducing a bug that broke file association settings of some applications, including Adobe Photoshop and Notepad++.  Microsoft addressed these and other issues in a subsequent update released last November.

Microsoft plans to ship a final May 2019 Update build to device manufacturers after it vetting it through Windows Insider. Fortin said that Microsoft plans to apply data from the Insider release to avoid issues such as those encountered with the 2018 update.
