Late last week we learned about a massive ransomware attack being referred to as ‘WannaCry.’ This attack is affecting more than 200,000 victims in 150 countries, including factories, hospitals, small businesses and schools.
Although this particular attack has been more common internationally, this does not mean you should take it lightly.
The main cause of these attacks has to do with not installing proper Windows System updates on XP or 2003, leaving users extremely vulnerable. Please be extra cautious during this time and do not open unfamiliar emails, ensure that your backups and anti-virus software are current and all updates are complete!
If you have been compromised, it will come through an automated script and you won’t know until the virus has infiltrated your system. Your file names will begin changing and you will be locked out.
At this point, the only way to get your information back is to pay the ransom they are asking, unless you have a good backup in place. In order for these backups to be secure, they should be offline or offsite.
Valeo Networks is experienced with preventing and handling attacks. We take care of patching, anti-virus software and assist in backing up your entire system, preventing you from having to pay a ransom.
